By using the Smart Building Management System (BMS), the building's electrical and mechanical equipment and devices can be controlled instead of being managed by people, using smart and integrated systems.

A smart building is a building in which all its internal components interact and are connected with each other through an integrated system and with an environmentally friendly logic. In other words, smart building designers integrate four basic elements i.e. systems, structure, services and management, to create a dynamic environment that is efficient and cost-effective, providing more comfort and safety for building users.

Smart building involves the installation and operation of building integration technology systems. These systems include building automation, safety and security measures, communications and facilities management systems. The main difference between a smart building and a normal building is that all the equipment, fixtures and utilities are connected to each other in the smart building, and they are directed in an integrated manner through a central system. In other words, a smart building is a building equipped with a strong communications infrastructure, which makes it able to constantly respond to changing environmental conditions and always adapt to them.

The following elements in an apartment building can be controlled by a central control system:

• Heating and cooling system for the building.
• Lighting system.

• All doors and windows.
• All electrical sockets.
